How to Fix Spotify Not Updating
The Spotify update issue can emerge from hardware, device, and software perspectives. All you have to do is, go through the solutions I’ve listed below until you solve your problem.
Here are the methods to fix updating issue on Spotify:
1. Force Update the App
If Spotify is not updating automatically, you need to force update the Spotify app.
To force update the iOS app, press and hold the App Store icon to reveal the options. Select Updates and it’ll open the list of apps pending an update. Find Spotify from the list and tap on the Update button to apply the update.
To force update Spotify on Android smartphones, go to the Google Play Store and search Spotify. App updates might be pending which you’d need to install.
To force update the Spotify desktop app, click on the profile dropdown from the top and select Check for Updates.
2. Ensure Your Device has Enough Space
If there is not enough storage on your Android or iPhone device, any application will not upgrade. Spotify is not indifferent to this situation.
You have to give Spotify enough storage for new updates. You can go to the Storage settings on your phone and check how much storage space is left. If your device is short of space, delete some big video files or uninstall apps you aren’t using for a long time.
Before deleting the local files, you can back them up in cloud storage in case you need them later or accidentally delete the wrong file.
3. Check the Internet Connection
You must ensure a working internet connection, and proper download and upload speed to play songs or stream music on Spotify.
As hundreds of millions of users are streaming podcasts and songs on Spotify concurrently, Spotify servers might face a huge load and shut down. If the Spotify servers are down, you’ll face issues along with other Spotify users even if your internet is fine.
So, first of all, check if Spotify is facing any server problems or not. You can visit the Downdetector page or the Spotify Status Twitter account.
If your Wi-Fi or internet connection is very slow, you will lose connection in the middle of the process and Spotify will fail to update. Do a speed test to check if you have enough internet speed.
The internet issue can arise from the Wi-Fi router, and you can restart the router to fix it. The internet problem can also originate from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), so you may contact them to sort things out. Windows Firewall can also block Spotify.

4. Log Out and Login to Spotify
The problem may seem bigger and more hectic than the solution if you don’t get any clue to solve it. Sometimes, you can get rid of the problem by logging out from the Spotify account and logging in back.
Here are the steps to log out and then log in:
- Open Spotify and go to the Settings option.
- Scroll down to the bottom.
- Look for the Log Out option and tap here to log out.
- Open your Spotify app again. You will see two options at the upper side saying Continue with Facebook and Continue with Apple. You have to choose according to the operating system you are using.
- Enter your email or username and the password.
- Tap on the Login option to log in back.
By following these steps, you can fix the updating issue on Spotify. It will also fix issues regarding downloading songs for offline use, playback or Daily Mix not updating.
5. Delete Spotify Cache
The Spotify cache and data files can cause problems in updating the app. So, it’s better to clear out the cache files.
Here’s the procedure to clear the cache in Spotify:
- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Scroll down to find Spotify and tap on it.
- Tap on the storage option.
- Select the Clear Cache option to clear Spotify cache.
If you select Clear Data, it will also delete the offline music files for Spotify.
This method also happens to fix Spotify stuttering on Android devices.
6. Reinstall Spotify
If the older version of Spotify doesn’t upgrade by following the above instructions, all you can do is you can uninstall and reinstall the app.
For this, you have to uninstall Spotify from your mobile or desktop. Then restart your device and go to the App Store, Google Play Store, or Microsoft Store and download the app for your expected device. You can log in to your account by Facebook account or following the on-screen instruction.
7. Using a VPN
Sometimes, Spotify updates might not work on your geographical location only. In such cases, you can update Spotify using a VPN.
A VPN will connect you to other servers different from the one serving your location, allowing you to update the Spotify app flawlessly. Therefore, connect to a VPN and try to update the application.
As an alternative, you can use the Spotify website on a desktop if none of the solutions are working properly.
Why is Spotify not Updating your Recently Played Artists?
You can frequently face the problem that your Spotify doesn’t update your recently played artists. This situation is irritating, isn’t it?
When you face this problem, don’t panic and follow my troubleshooting steps:
- Log out from your existing account.
- Restart your device.
- Log in back to your device.
By following this instruction, you can solve your problem and go back to enjoying Spotify music.
Why is Your Spotify on Repeat not Updating?
If Spotify is repeating the songs and is not updating the songs, it might not have enough data to gather recommendations for you. Try to listen to some more songs and then check if everything is fine. You can search for new songs via the Search tab.
It also could be an internet issue, as Spotify is not able to fetch your song recommendations when the internet is weak. You can force close the app and then launch it. Then use Spotify and see if it still repeats.
If you’re using Spotify Premium, it can be a bug that’ll be patched by Spotify in a future update.
