How to Eject a Disc from PlayStation?
Ejecting a disc from the PlayStation 5 is easy. You don’t even have to get up from your couch to remove the disc. However, you have to walk over and collect it.
The PS button on your controller should be pressed to return you to the main menu. Select the game or movie from the list by clicking it. To access the Options menu, press the Options button on your controller. Remove the disc by selecting it.
You’ll see two buttons on the front of your new console. These two buttons are for power and eject, respectively. You’ll find the eject button in the middle of the console. Any disc in the console will be immediately removed if you press this button.
When the console is turned off, this approach works just as well as when it is turned on. It will start up instantly if this is done when the console is off or in rest mode.
The process is pretty much the same for installing a game as well. Insert a disc, and your game will be ready to install in a couple of minutes.

But now you might ask why my PlayStation 5 isn’t playing a disc?
Let me start with the positive news. Yes, you can use a PS4 disc on a PS5. But you can’t use the PlayStation 1, 2, or 3 discs on the PlayStation 5.
So go ahead and curse the PS5. On the plus side, the PS4 had no backward compatibility. It can only play PS4 games.
But, please, PlayStation! Set backward compatibility on all future Sony platforms. Look at Xbox and learn. Thanks to backward compatibility with prior systems, the new Xbox series offers a huge library.
But let’s head back to the PS5 eject features. If you are a lazy player like me and want to remove the disc from the couch, you can very much do so because of the new Dual Sense controller.
If a player feels the need to remove the console without being near the device, they may do so by pressing the eject button. It’s a good thing for these folks that the PS5’s controller and menu allow them to eject a disc remotely.
You can go to the home screen by pressing and holding the PlayStation button on your DualSense controller. Find the game presently in the disc drive on the main screen. To open a new menu, press the menu button on your remote while hovering over its icon. Scroll to the bottom of the list to find Eject Disc.

Before going into the details of how to fix the PlayStation 5 eject button, you might be curious why the ps5 eject button is not working?
Well, to be fair, there can be many reasons behind it. It can be the faulty game disc or the blu-ray DVD that is causing the problem. PS5 discs are very prone to getting dirty or damaged. So it is not a surprise for the people to have the issue because of the discs. The same goes for the people who are using the PS as their media driver. Inserting and rejecting the disc continuously will lead you to this problem.
On the other hand, a system glitch can prevent you from ejecting the disc. Updating the system or restarting the PS5 will fix the problem. The worst-case scenario would be that your PlayStation 5 disc driver is not working for some reason. However, Sony provided some official guide on it how you can fix it in your home. So let’s get into troubleshooting.
Here are the steps to fix the PS5 eject button not working:
1. Update the PS5
PlayStation 5 is still in its early days. So minor, and in some cases, major bugs are very much normal at this time of its development. Updating the PS5 will fix most of the issues.
Here are the steps to update PS5:
- Go to settings.
- Scroll down to the system.
- Select system software.
- Press X on system software updates.
- Download and install the update.
After you are done updating the system software, try ejecting the disc from your PlayStation 5.
2. Restart PlayStation5
If you have already installed the updated system software version of the PS5, you can force restart your PlayStation 5, which might fix the problem.
Here are the steps to restart the PS5:
- Press the PS button.
- Go to the control center.
- Select power options.
- Press x on restart PS5.
After the restart, give your PlayStation 5 a breathing room to start everything up and then hit the eject button to see if the disc is coming out or not. If not, follow the next method.

3. Use the Controller
You can eject discs in the PlayStation 5 in two ways. As I have discussed earlier, one with the eject button and another way is via the controller. Your eject button can get stuck, and if you find a way to release the disc, it will work like the way it used to.
Here are the steps to eject a disc with a PS5 controller:
- Go to the main menu.
- Select the game or the media disc you want to eject.
- Press the options button.
- Chose eject disc.
Your disc should come out at this point. If not, you have to take out the disc from your PlayStation 5 manually. For that, you will need a screwdriver and a flat surface.
4. Manually Eject the Disc
If your disc is stuck in the PlayStation 5, it doesn’t necessarily mean there is something wrong with the optical drive of the PlayStation 5. The eject button might not work if there is anything wrong with the disc. Manually removing it will solve the problem.
Here are the steps to manually eject the disc in PS5:
- Switch off the PlayStation 5.
- Take out all the cables from the PS5.
- Open the faceplate of the PS5.
- Locate the optical drive.
- Take a cross-headed screwdriver.
- Screw clockwise in the black plastic hole.
- Turn the screw clockwise until you see the disc come out fully from the PS5.
After that, hook your PlayStation 5 with the power cable and HDMI. Insert a disc into the PlayStation 5 and eject it. Hopefully, it will work.
