Switch from New Outlook to Old on Mac [Step-by-Step 2024]

Written By Steven Arends

Installed the new version of Outlook on your Mac, and something doesn’t feel, right? Upgrading any application to the latest version sometimes hampers the comforting looks of the app. I mean, the new look feels awkward at first.

But, in the case of Microsoft Outlook, the problem is more than looks. The interface and functionality change when you install the latest version of Outlook.switch-from-new-outlook-to-old-on-mac

For instance, after installing Outlook version 16.58 (22010904) on my Macbook, it started to deny opening shared mailbox service and stopped me from resending emails. And unfortunately, many of the users reported the same issues.

The possible workaround for this issue is switching back to the Old Outlook version.

In this article, I’ll be sharing the complete guideline to revert to the Old Outlook.

How to Switch Back to Old Outlook on Mac

Open Outlook and click on the view tab from the dashboard. From the list of the view tab, move your mouse cursor to the reading pane. Switch the reading pane to the right. That will change the Outlook interface to the old view. Try further instruction if you are unable to revert to legacy view.customize-to-old-outlook-view-in-mac

Even if the described method can’t get you back to the old Outlook, there are still some methods. Keep reading to find out.

Earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook had a toggle on top of the dashboard. You could turn on/off the new update whenever necessary. The more recent Outlook build version changed the interface drastically.

Here are the steps to revert Outlook to Old on Mac:

1. Turn Off New Outlook for Mac

To revert Outlook from the newest version, there’s a dedicated button in the application. Though Microsoft disabled the button in the new 16.68 version, you can find it on 16.69.

Here’s the procedure to turn off new Outlook on Mac:

  • Launch Outlook on your device.
  • Move the mouse cursor to the top left corner of your mac.
  • Click on Outlook. A drop-down menu will pop up.
  • Untick New Outlook from there. uncheck-new-outlook-in-mac

Usually, New Outlook remains ticked on after updating to the latest version. You need to deselect it if you don’t like the updates. Outlook will restart automatically after the process, and your missing features will be visible once it restarts.

2. Revert to Legacy Outlook

The newer version of Outlook creates problems with the calender and address book. For instance, the new calendar menu can’t save the addresses of individuals. Also, re-sending replies to emails are not available in the newest Outlook version.

To solve this issue, you can revert to the legacy mode on Mac.

Here are the steps to revert Outlook Mac to Legacy View:

  • Launch Outlook on your Macbook.
  • Move the mouse cursor to the dashboard of your mac. New options will visible.
  • Click on Help from the dashboard. A new popup menu will appear.
  • Select Reverse to Legacy Outlook.revert-to-legacy-in-outlook-mac

Restart the Outlook application on Mac, and the application will switch back to the old version.

3. Uninstall Outlook and Reinstall the Older Outlook

If the guidelines mentioned above can’t help you get back to the old Outlook, try reinstalling it. But, don’t just install the latest version. Download and install Outlook version 16.57 or lower.

Follow my instructions in case you don’t know the procedure.

Here’s the process to uninstall and reinstall older Outlook versions:

  • Quit Outlook from your device.
  • Launch the Applications folder from the Mac.
  • Right-click on Microsoft Outlook and select move to the bin.
  • Launch Finder and type ~/Library/ in Go to the folder option.microsoft-outlook-and-select-move-to-the-bin.
  • Locate this service in the library; ~/Library/Application Support/com.microsoft.Outlook and delete it.library
  • Open Safari or any web browser.
  • Search for filehorse in the browser and download Microsoft Office 2016 15.41.
  • Install the application on your Mac.

That’s it. You’ve now successfully reverted to the old Outlook version.

These are the ways to go back to the old Outlook version. I’ve used these guidelines and got the best outcome.

  1. This morning Microsoft pushed out an update for Office 365. After loading the update, Outlook was switched to the “new version.” The toggle to turn off the new version was still there. All I had to do was click the toggle, and presto! The legacy version was back and working fine. Is there a way for a novice that can remove the toggle from the toolbar and essentially LOCK Outlook to the legacy version? Until there is feature parity, I don’t want to switch.
