Recently, when I was trying to play a simulation game on my VR, I struggled to run the Game Cleanly. It made me feel dizzy while I was playing the game. It also caused motion sickness.
But, as a VR enthusiast, I researched and figured out the reason behind the problem.
So, why is VR Stuttering?
After I detected the reason behind the issue, I spent several hours discovering the solution. Thankfully I also found some simple methods to solve the stuttering issue of VR.
In this post, I will share my experience with you to solve your VR Stuttering issue.
Why is VR Stuttering during Gameplay?
VR headsets are stuttering during gameplay for many reasons. Sometimes it occurs for technical incompatibility of your PC. On the other hand, it happens for the incorrect settings of SteamVR.
As VR is the newest form of technology, it’s hard to detect the specific reason for the issue.
But some possible system malfunctions are causing this stutter problem in VR.
Here are the reasons behind the VR Stuttering issue:
1. Wrong Settings of Steam VR
VR stuttering is a common issue for SteamVR.Wrong SteamVR settings are responsible for this issue. When you don’t adjust your Steam VR settings correctly, you feel dizzy while playing Steam VR games.
If Reprojection, Bluetooth, and Camera are enabled in the steam VR, VR is stuttering while playing the game.

2. Overloaded External Programs
If your PC runs unnecessary programs in the background, then it hampers the usual work process of VR. Apps like Google Chrome is massive RAM and performance cutter for your PC.
This can cause a lag when you are playing a VR game.
3. Overclock Issue in BIOS
If there is a stock speed of overclocking on your PC BIOS, then there is a chance to decrease VR performance. Typically when your PC’s Windows is not updated correctly, this performance issue arises.
High-end VR games are not compatible with the traditional power management settings. You should adjust your Power Management Settings to High Performance.
4. Faulty Driver Settings
Recently some users have complained that their old NVidia Graphics Drivers are not adjustable with new VR games or applications.
The problem will appear if the Shadowplay option is enabled in Nvidia GeForce.

5. Wrong Game Settings
Wrong VR game settings are another common reason behind this issue. If the Game Graphics is not Compatible with the PC, it slows down the performance and creates a lag in Gameplay. The maximum spectator window can cause the stuttering problem in VR.

How To Fix VR Stuttering during Gaming
There is no specific solution to solve this issue, and I found some simple methods that can help you to fix the problem effortlessly.
Here are the methods to fix the VR Stuttering Issues:
1. Adjust Your Steam VR Settings
A possible reason for the VR stuttering issue is the wrong adjustment of Steam VR settings.
So, you should adjust some of your Steam VR Settings.
Disable the Reprojection, Bluetooth, and Camera of Steam VR.

Here are the methods for Disabling Reprojection in Steam VR:
- Open steam on your PC.
- Go to a VR game.
- Press Shift+A to go to the Reprojection menu.
- Disable interleaved Reprojection from steam VR
Here are the methods for Disabling Camera in Steam VR:
- Open the steam VR app on your Computer.
- Select Settings from the menubar.
- Find Camera option.
- Press the Disable switch.
Here are the methods for Disabling Bluetooth in Steam VR:
- Open the steam VR app on your Computer.
- Select Settings from the menubar.
- Enter into the General option.
- Uncheck Enable Bluetooth Communication option.
You should also disable the Performace Heuristics option.
2. Stop External Apps
When you are playing a game in VR, external apps that run in the background can interrupt the game and create lag in the game.
You can remove external apps in two methods:
Remove from Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Del keys together. Some security options will appear.
- Select Task Manager from the list by double-clicking on it.
- Select your External apps from the File list of the Task Manager tab
- Press the End Task button. Your selected Tasks are stopped working.
Remove from Settings
- Go to the Start menu.
- Search for the settings menu.
- Go to the Privacy option.
- Select Background Apps from the Privacy option.
- Turn off all the Background Apps.
These are the two methods of Stop background apps. Now try to play a VR game in Steam VR.

3. Adjust the Game Settings
Wrong VR game setting is another common reason behind this issue.
If your PC is not compatible with High-End VR games, adjust some Game settings to play the VR game Perfectly.
First, you have to open the Settings of the game. To open the settings window of a game, Press Alt and double-click on the game in your Steam library.
Here are the steps to adjust the game settings:
- Disable or reduce the external monitor’s resolution.
- Reduce the game’s in-game visuals.
- Reduce the size of the spectator window.
If any application overlaps the spectator window, it reduces performance; try to avoid that application.
You may boost the game process priority higher to have Windows give it more resources and reduce stuttering in VR games.

4. Update The BIOS of your PC
If there is a stock speed of overclocking on your PC BIOS, then there is a chance to decrease VR performance.
So, you have to update your BIOS to get rid of the issue.
Here are steps that you should follow to update the BIOS:
- Find the Current Version of BIOS.you will find it on the Manufacturer’s Website.
- Go to the BIOS and enter into the UEFI BIOS.
- Boot into the UEFI Control Panel.
- Go to the motherboard support page and download the latest version of BIOS.
- Unzip the downloaded file.
- Update the file on a USB flash device.
- Enter the UEFI control panel to restart your machine.
- Use the UEFI firmware update or flashing program to back up the existing firmware on your PC.
By following this method, you can update your BIOS.
5. Upgrade Your Operating System
You can’t play a VR game on an outdated version of the Operating System.VR games
Your PC has to fill up minimum requirements to be compatible with VR games.
High-end VR games are not compatible with the traditional power management settings. You should adjust your Power Management Settings to High Performance by upgrading your PC’s operating system.
Here are the steps to upgrade your operating system:
- Download the ISO file of the latest version of OS.
- Boot it into a USB flash drive.
- Connect it with the PC and set up the new OS.
6. Adjust Nvidia GPU Driver Settings
You should also change the Graphics driver’s settings, especially if you have an Nvidia Geforce Graphics Card.
Here are the steps to adjust Nvidia GPU driver settings:
- Change Performance settings to High Performance. You can do it by entering Control Panel.
- Stop the Following Nvidia services:
- Streamer Network Service
- Streamer Service
- Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service
