Imagine you are a painting artist. If the artboard & colors are organized & closer to you, it will be more swiftly & efficient to draw a picture. But if the color tray is not big enough, you have to put color again & again, which consumes time & leads to focus loss.
Now let the artist be a CPU & the colors as RAM. The processor’s L3 Cache can collect data faster when the RAM has enough data pulling from the storage drive. Otherwise, the cache will have to wait until the new data will come into the DRAM. This results in performance loss.
When the processor needs data, it doesn’t search all your hard drives which is much slower, instead, the RAM assists to read & write data instantly.

Can CPU Work Without RAM?

The CPU acquires data from the RAM and reads & writes from there. That’s how a PC works. For this reason, without a memory module, the CPU won’t be able to collect data. Running any software requires copying data to RAM from the storage drive.
In fact, the operating system won’t boot either, let alone do something in the OS. The system will not pass POST when the CPU fails. Additionally, the motherboard’s RAM debug led will turn on.
If you have a speaker plugged into the motherboard, you will also hear a unique beep sound which indicates that there is no RAM, or it is faulty.
The BIOS is stored in ROM & the processor has built-in memory (Cache). But still, you can’t load anything without having RAM. The Windows boot loader needs to copy into the memory module from the disk during the boot & the ROM will not work as RAM, leading to boot failure.

To boot a PC, RAM is a must. If you have a vehicle without wheels, will it roll normally? 一No. But you can manage some alternative ways, like using a tow truck for moving the car. But the vehicle will still not roll by itself & it’s still useless. But for RAM, there is no alternate way. However, some Intel server chips based on Linux, run in a cache. Even all processors have cache memory, which is way faster than RAM, yet fail to boot without the support of the actual memory module. The cache memory only works when the processor collects data from the RAM after the boot. And only then, the CPU cache memory temporarily holds data.

- Terrible Performance: When the actual physical memory runs out, the system starts to use page files from the hard disk as virtual memory. This virtual memory is so sluggish compared to RAM, resulting in poor performance.
- Freeze Multitask: Generally, each application requires its own amount of RAM. When multiple apps are working, the total amount of RAM consumption goes high. If there is not enough RAM obtainable, some programs can freeze.
- Random Reboot: If memory goes out of range repeatedly, this can lead to an occasional reboot.
- Application Incompatibility: Most games, applications, or OS require a recommended amount of RAM. If the available RAM doesn’t meet the requirement, the apps may crash or don’t even install in some cases.

Higher-capacity RAM will ensure smooth application function, like a high-end CPU or GPU. But RAM with higher capacity or speed is also costlier for their performance boost. This is why you have to find out how much RAM is enough for a fluent operation.
