What is AMD Equivalent to Intel Core i7? [Expert’s Opinion]

Written By Steven Arends

The Core i7 series is one of the leading processors in high-performance gaming, multimedia editing, content creation, and so on.

But, if you prefer AMD over Intel and want to experience the same features, you probably seek such AMD CPUs that are equal to Intel Core i7 processors.what-is-amd-equivalent-to-intel-core-i7 In this article, I will provide a list of those AMD processors and explain why they are comparable to Intel Core i7 CPUs.

So, tag along.

What Are the AMD Equivalent CPUs of Intel Core i7?

Most of the AMD Ryzen 7 series CPUs are equivalent to Intel Core i7. But in early 2022 Intel increased the core count in their 12th & 13th Generation CPUs. That’s why some Ryzen 9 series like R9 7900x and 5900x are also now matched with Intel Core i7 series processors.

In the following table, I have provided a list of similar AMD processors of Intel Core i7. Check these out.

Other than Core i7-12700 & Core i7-12700K, the Core i7-12700KF, and 12700F is close to the same as AMD R9 5900X, R7 7700X and 7700 in reality.

Though the specifications of Core i7-12700, Core i7-12700K, Core i7-12700KF, and 12700F are the same, it’s the iGPU that makes the difference. The fact is, the Core i7-12700KF and 12700F don’t have any iGPU in them.

From the specs you can see, the build quality is quite alike except for the R7 7700X. It is also more expensive than the other three CPUs.

But when you look at the benchmark results of the CPUs, you will see that their performance is comparable.

Ryzen 7 vs. Intel Core i7: Which One Should You Choose?

Between Ryzen 7 and Intel Core i7, it’s quite a long debate, about which one is better and which one you should get. In the current market, if you want to get a CPU at a lower price and with better performance, you should choose an Intel Core-i7 processor.

In the following section, I have given a comparison of Intel and AMD processors from a price and performance perspective. Check those out.

From a Price Perspective

Ryzen 7 processors are now upgraded from AM4 to AM5. Due to these AM5 sockets, you have to get a new motherboard that supports AM5. And the AM5 motherboard price is relatively high.

Moreover, to use an AM5 processor, you will need DDR5 RAM, which is also expensive. For example, AMD Ryzen 7 7700X with AM5 socket costs around $415–$450.

On the other hand, if you take Intel Core-i7’s 12th Gen or 13th Gen processors, they still run on DDR4. And the price of an Intel Core i7-13700 processor cost around $384-$394.

However, you can use AMD Ryzen 7 with AM4 for around the same cost. But it doesn’t make sense to use an old AMD processor with an AM4 platform socket where you can get a better Intel processor at the same price.

So, from the price perspective, Intel wins.

From a Performance Perspective

If we focus on performance, AMD supports AM4 sockets and DDR4 RAM. But you will get a bit better clock speed and gaming performance on Intel 12th and 13th Gen processors.

For example, on the Intel Core i7-13700, the Cinebench R23 score for the multi-core is 24642. And AMD Ryzen 7 7700X the Cinebench R 23 score for the multi-core is 19905.

So, based on performance, Intel also wins here.

Overall, in my opinion, you should get an Intel Core-i7 processor for this generation. Things may change drastically in the coming years when Intel and AMD come up with new generation processors.

So you see which Core i7 processors are almost similar to AMD processors, let’s go further and identify the AMD CPUs that are identical to Intel Core i3, Core i5 and Core i9.

FAQs

Is Ryzen 7 equivalent to Core i7?

Based on the technicality and performance, Ryzen 7 is equivalent to Core i7. After the core update in 2022, some Ryzen 9 series CPUs are now similar to core i7.

Should I buy an i9 or a Ryzen 9?

The AMD Ryzen 9 and Core i9 are both now in toe-to-toe competition with each other. But you should buy an R9 processor. It’s because Ryzen 9 7950X has shown 36% and 30% faster scores in Cinebench & Geekbench multi-core tests against Core i9-12900K.

Which is better, AMD Ryzen or Intel?

At the moment, in terms of price and performance, Intel is ahead of AMD. However, AMD is no less than Intel. Its new Ryzen 9 CPU has shown more remarkable performance in gaming than other Intel processors.

Final Thought

Based on both of these processors’ specifications and benchmarks, now you know which AMD and Intel processors are equivalent. I hope you have decided which processors you want to go for.
