Issues like Chromebook turned on, but the screen is black or crashing immediately after turning it is common, and you can fix it quickly.

Read along!

Why Isn’t Your Chromebook Turning On?

Your Chromebook might not boot up, or the screen might remain black if the battery charger is damaged or it’s not charging the battery. Plus, internal hardware issues can interrupt the Chromebook’s boot system. However, the bug in the Chrome OS might trigger this issue too.

Sometimes plugging in an external hardware interface like a corrupted USB thumb drive alone can prevent the Chromebook from turning on. So, you must consider several factors when your Chromebook fails to start.

Besides this Chromebook startup failure, it could crash instantly after booting up. And this could happen for any corrupted Chrome extensions in the browser or apps.

And I would like to add one specific reason: the Chrome OS itself. If you didn’t upgrade the Chrome OS to the latest version, problems like this could happen anytime. Trust me; my Chromebook has gone through this issue due to the backdated Chrome OS several times.

But I fixed this, and now you can do too with treasure-like fixes I’ll demonstrate next.

How to Fix a Chromebook that Won’t Turn On

If your Chromebook is not turning on, grab the battery charger and check whether it’s working correctly or not. If you don’t see the charging indicator light, get another changer and charge with that. Remove any external USB drive if plugged in and turn it on again.

However, if you can’t log in to your Chromebook after turning it on, create another user account and log in with that. Sometimes, the screen remains black after booting up. If that’s happening to your Chromebook, restart the device.

Besides covering the fixes for start-up issues in Chromebook, I have added other solutions to the problem, such as the followings:

  • The screen stays black even when the device is on.
  • The device keeps crashing instantly after turning it on.
  • Chromebook won’t start when you press the Power button.
  • Not able to log in to Chromebook after boots up.

Here are the methods in detail to fix Chromebook not turning on:

1. Check the Chromebook Charger

When you charge your Chromebook, you will see a charging indicator LED light near the charging port. The LED light will be orange or deep blue while charging, but it depends mainly on the manufacturer. chromebook-charging-light

If the LED is off, charge the Chromebook with another charger. And charge the Chromebook for at least 4 hours and hit the power button afterward. It will turn on this time.

But if the additional charger fails to charge the device, the problem must be lurking in the Chromebook’s charging port or the battery.

2. Unplug External USB Devices

So, one day my Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook wasn’t booting up. I connected the charger and tried to boot it up, but nothing happened. Then, I noticed a thumb drive was attached to the USB port.

Therefore, I disconnect the USB drive and hit the power button. This time my Chromebook turned on.

The fact is USB devices can interfere with the starting process. So, remove any external USB device if your Chromebook isn’t booting up and try to turn it on again. I believe you can use your Chromebook again.

3. Remove Apps

If Chromebook keeps crashing each time after turning on, there might be a problem with the Chrome extensions or apps. So, uninstall recently installed or updated extensions & apps.

  • Click on the Chromebook menu icon from the lower left corner.
  • Right-click on the app and click Uninstall from the context menu. uninstall-apps-from-chromebook
  • Select the Uninstall button again from the prompt. click-uninstall-from-prompt

After that, install one app at a time and see which one triggers the issue. Delete that application permanently, and that’s how your problem will be solved.

4. Update Chrome OS

Backdated OS causes issues, and crashing the system is one of them. If you’re running your Chromebook without updating it to the latest version, the system could crash without any previous warning.

That’s why you must update the Chrome OS to the latest version and save the day.

  • Click the clock from the bottom right corner.
  • Select the Settings or cog icon. chrome-os-settings
  • Select the About Chrome OS section from the left pane.
  • Click on the Check for updates button. update-chrome-os

Now, it will start checking for updates instantly. After updating to the latest version, restart the PC.

5. Hard Restart the Chromebook

When the device is turned on, but the screen remains black, you should hard restart the device. It will clear the PC’s memory and caches.

To hard restart your Chromebook, you must simultaneously hold the Refresh and Power button. And thus, turn on the Chromebook in no time. Sometimes clogged-up caches interfere with the bootup system, but a hard restart will clear those eventually. hard-restart-chrombeook-using-keyboard

6. Sign in to Chromebook with Another Account

Sometimes Chromebook users can’t log in to their account after switching it on. This problem occurs when your Google account and laptop fail to sync correctly. To solve this problem, create a new account for Chromebook or log in as a guest.

7. Powerwash Chromebook

It’s time to return the Chromebook to its original settings if you want to remove any previous modifications. Powerwash or factory reset is kind of a similar procedure. Let’s see how to do that.

  • Take the mouse cursor to the bottom-right corner, and click on the clock.
  • Select the Sign Out button.
  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r, and a prompt will appear on the screen.
  • Select the Powerwash option and then hit Continue.

Now, follow the on-screen instructions and sign in with your Google account.

Note: Please save all the necessary files before factory resetting your Chromebook. Otherwise, Powerwash will erase all the files in the drive.

8. Replace the Battery

If you can’t charge the Chromebook even with a new charger, there might be a problem with the battery. So, go to the service center if your Chromebook has a warranty.

Otherwise, you can replace the battery in case the warranty expires. So, buy a new battery, take the screwdriver, and uncover Chromebook’s back. Then replace the battery.

Note: Replace the battery only when you know how to do the laptop’s inner workings. If you don’t, go to your nearest PC repair shop.
