Why Does Microsoft Teams Fail To Connect You?
Microsoft Teams fails to connect you or throws an error message – Sorry, we couldn’t connect you – mainly due to an unstable internet connection, technical glitches within the app, lack of updates, problems with the installation of Teams, blockage by antivirus software, etc.
Before reaching any effective and practical solution, it is essential to figure out the possible reasons for the error. That’s why I tried to put some light on the matter.
Imagine you fixed a video conference on Microsoft Teams. You have already provided the meeting link to the attendants. Now, when you initiated the meeting, some of the participants cannot join the meeting even after repetitive attempts. They shared with you an error message like the following-
This is not an uncommon scenario. Just think, exactly this will happen to your company’s annual general meeting. Is not it horrible!
Here are a few reasons behind the problem:
Unstable Internet Connection
Microsoft Teams relies on a stable and strong internet connection to function properly. If the internet connection is slow or unstable, Teams connection may fail.
Technical Glitches
Sometimes, technical glitches within the Microsoft Teams app can cause it to fail to connect. This could be due to a bug in the app or a conflict with other software on the device.
Lack of Updates
Failing to update the Microsoft Teams app regularly can cause it to malfunction or fail to connect. Updates often include bug fixes, security patches, and other improvements that help the app run smoothly.
Teams Installation Issue

How to Fix Microsoft Teams Sorry, We Couldn’t Connect You
Microsoft Teams has been serving its users worldwide as a reliable communication method.
To supervise my subordinates, I personally use Microsoft Teams for my official interaction, and so do my authoritative seniors.
Starting from cold calling to collaboration on a business meeting, I count on Microsoft Teams for its fidelity and services. I know you also do so.
Believe me, no matter how big the problem is, there will always be a solution to that.
Here, the issue with Microsoft Teams account being discussed is quite a little. So, fixing the problem will become a piece of cake for you after reading the entire article.
Here are the methods to fix Microsoft Teams unable to connect:
1. Check your Internet Connection
As Microsoft Teams meeting and conferencing features work online in real-time, you need to have a stable network connection with decent bandwidth to operate the application smoothly. Under the area of a shaky signal, it cannot connect you to your counterpart.
The first thing to do is take a look at the network icon in the system tray on your Windows desktop. If you found it clean, then the connection is okay.
But, if there is any red cross signal or yellow triangle sign upon the wireless icon, then your connection is unsettled. Thus, it will result in null internet access.
Alternatively, follow the steps below:
- Right-click on the network icon.
- Choose Open Network and Sharing Center.
There you will get the current status of your network. If you witness the network status similar to the image below, that indicates you have no internet access.
You can also check the same by going to Windows Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network & Sharing Center. Here, watch the Active Network section to ensure you’re connected and the connection is stable.
You can also do some additional steps like restarting the router and checking the Microsoft Teams server status to ensure the server isn’t down.
2. Clear Microsoft Teams Cache
Any application preserves the data and files you frequently use in its cache memory. The application precisely picks the data up from the cache memory when required. And, if any of the files are corrupted in Windows, the entire application starts malfunctioning.
So, I will recommend you clear the Teams cache. There is a high chance it will solve your issue.
Here are the steps to clear MS Teams cache:
- Close the Teams app.
- Press Win+R to launch the Run program.
- Type %appdata% and press OK.
- Go to the folder: Microsoft > Teams.
- Delete all the files.
Now restart the PC and launch Microsoft Teams.
Hope, this will lead to a new successful chapter with Teams. If the error message still appears, go for the next method.
3. Logout and Login to Teams
Logging out of Teams and then logging in again seems to fix the issue for many. So, you might as well give it a shot.
Open Teams and click on your avatar at the top, then select Sign out from the menu. Then log back in using your credentials.
See if the issue is resolved.
4. Use System Speakers
Many users fixed the issue by setting built-in speakers as the default audio for Teams. So, you can also try it.
Follow the steps below to change Teams audio settings:
- Open Teams.
- Click on the three dots at the top corner of the app to open the menu.
- Go to Settings > Devices.
- Select the system speaker in the dropdown. It can be Intel HD Audio, Realtek Audio, or similar.
Now, go back to the meeting and see if the fix works. If it did, you can revert back the settings to using your custom speakers (wired headphones or Bluetooth air buds).
5. Close Background Apps
If you have any background apps or processes running that might interfere with Teams, there’s a significant chance that it’s causing the problem.
So, you should close all background apps that interact with Teams or have a chance of interfering with it.
Follow the steps below to close background apps:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Processes tab.
- Right-click on any background process that might cause the issue.
- Select End task.
- Repeat the process for all suspected background processes.
Now launch Teams and see if the Teams error message goes away.
From my long experience in giving troubleshooting tips, you could fix most minor errors by restarting the particular software or the computer. After a fresh start, mostly the problems get fixed.
So, if closing background apps did not fix the issue, go back to the Task Manager and close Teams from there using the same procedure.
Then launch Teams and check if you face the error message again. If it remains, jump to the following method.
6. Set a New User Profile
It’s possible that the current user profile on your Windows OS has some corrupted data that’s preventing Teams from connecting to the server.
Hence, using a new Windows user should remove this issue.
Here are the steps to add a new Windows user:
- Press Win+I to launch Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Family & other users > Add someone else to this PC.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set up a new user profile.
- Sign in to the new user profile.
Now open the app and see if the issue persists.
7. Update MS Teams
If the latest version of Teams is available, install it at the soonest. There are cases when applications throw errors due to being outdated.
The following steps will check available updates and install them automatically:
- Open Microsoft Teams application on your computer.
- Click on your profile picture.

Here also, I suggest you uninstall and reinstall Teams on your system. If there is any crack or bug on the software itself, it will be fixed.
Here’s the procedure to uninstall Microsoft 365 Teams from your computer:

9. Disable Antivirus Temporarily
I got reports that some users fixed the error with MS Teams by disabling the antivirus software installed on their computers.
For some others, they needed to disable the firewall or VPN applications.
Hence, if your problem is not fixed yet, you may try this. Once your problem is solved, allow the Microsoft Teams application on your firewall, antivirus, and VPNs.
10. Use Microsoft Teams on the Web
If you anyhow cannot manage the pop-up error on Teams desktop application, the remaining alternative is to use the web version of MS Teams.
To use Microsoft Teams on the web, open Chrome or any browser, and go to Teams website. Log in to your Teams account using the password and try joining a scheduled meeting.
I think your journey with Teams web will be as pleasant as that of the desktop app.
