On the edge of missing your scheduled deadline because Premiere Pro crashed?
Be at ease since you are here now. As a regular user of the platform, I know the ins and out of the app. So let me tell you what could possibly create the issue and how to resolve it throughout this article.
Besides, if you are facing freezing, lagging, and slowing down issues on Premiere Pro, this content will also safeguard you from all those calamities.
Let’s dig deep!
How to Stop Adobe Premiere Pro From Keep Crashing
When you encounter that your Premiere Pro is crashing, freezing, or not rendering, disable the graphics driver. Plus, resetting preference, clearing the media cache, and turning off the GPU acceleration can solve your issue. But first, ensure you meet the requirement to run the program.
Because if you don’t meet the minimum system requirement, your PC can not handle the pressure that Premiere Pro produces, hence the system crash. So let’s see what PC configurations are required to run Adobe Premiere Pro.
Here is the minimum system requirement for Adobe Premiere Pro:
Windows | macOS |
---|---|
Intel 6th Gen or latest CPUs and Ryzen 1000 series or recent CPUs | Intel 6th Gen or latest |
Windows 11 or 10 (64 bits or newer) | macOS v10.15 which means (Catalina) or newer |
RAM 8 GB or more | RAM 8 GB or better |
Dedicated GPU, at least 2 GB or more | 8 GB of unified Apple Silicon GPU or more |
8 GB of Free space or more | 8 GB of Free space or more |
If you meet the above configuration and your PC even offers more than that, you should face no issue at all. But still, if your Premiere Pro remains crushed, then move along and fix it with the given working solutions.
Quick Tip: Before following any steps, uninstall Premiere Pro and reinstall it to check whether the problem resolves or not.
1. Disable Graphics Driver
Maybe it sounds weird, but this is a working fix and numerous users claim it is the one that resolves their crashing and freezing error on Premiere Pro.
Here is the process to disable your Graphics Driver on Windows:
- Right-click on the Windows icon.
- Choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click on your Graphics Card.
- Select Disable device.
- Click on Yes when prompted.
- Relaunch your project on Adobe.
Although this procedure seems insufficient, it can solve your crash issue. And when your Premiere Pro starts to work like a charm, you can Enable the Graphics Card once again by navigating through the reverse process.
2. Reset Your Preferences
Resetting your preferences can help stop Premiere Pro from crashing. Some Premiere Pro users mention this step as quite helpful.
Here’s the action you must take to reset your preferences:
- Hold the Alt key when launching Adobe Premiere Pro. A pop-up will ask you if you’re sure to reset your Premiere Pro.
- Click OK to confirm and wait for the process to finish.
When the process is completed, relaunch Premiere Pro and see if the crashing issue resolves.
3. Remove Media Cache Files
The media cache is temporary storage that stores media files imported into Premiere Pro. It allows Premiere Pro to access files quickly. But corrupted media cache files can provoke the app’s crashing issue.
Here are some simple steps to remove media cache files:
- Launch Premiere Pro and go to Edit > Preferences > Media Cache.
- Click Delete to remove the media cache files when the media Cache window opens.
- Click OK and wait for the process to complete.
After the process completes, launch Premiere Pro again and see if the problem is gone.
4. Turn Off the GPU Acceleration
GPU acceleration is one of the most common causes behind Premiere Pro’s crashing. So, if your app keeps crashing, make sure to check and change its acceleration preference. You need to turn off GPU acceleration and set the system to the Software Only acceleration.
Here are the steps to turn off the GPU acceleration:
- Open the Adobe Premiere Pro app.
- Go to the File tab.
- Click Project Settings and choose General.
- Set the Renderer option to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only under the Video Rendering and Playback.
- Select OK and close the window.
So, you’ve switched GPU acceleration to Software only. Thus, your Premiere Pro will take more time to render from now on. Though this process would reduce the random crashes, it creates a new problem— time delay.
5. Reset Workspace to Saved Layout
If you don’t want to factory reset all of your preferences, just reset your current workspace. And that can exterminate the crashing issue on Adobe Pro.
Here is the method to reset the workspace to saved layout:
- Open Premiere Pro and go to Window.
- Move your cursor to Workspace and then select Reset to Saved Layout.
This might be a quick solution to your problem. When your crashing dispute is settled, you will be relieved from stress.
However, that cheery moment of your life will be disturbed when a popup appears on your screen that says your Adobe is not genuine, although it is! You should fix that with genuine software integrity. Besides, you can disable that genuine integrity on Adobe.
6. Use Default Font
A font is considered a graphical representation of text that may include a different typeface, point size, color, and design. In Premiere Pro, you can customize your texts and fonts as you wish. But let me tell you an unpleasant truth.
Some fonts don’t work well in Premiere Pro. If you use a caption in your project and experience crashes, it’s pathetic but isn’t an uncommon issue. So, change your fonts and see if that solves the issue.
Additionally, if you are also a user of Photoshop simultaneously with Adobe and face the same kind of error, then resolving its crashing problem can also lessen your burden.
7. Break Up Bigger Projects
You can work on a huge 4K file with your Premiere Pro. But sometimes, this big file can slow down your performance, and even can create a crash.
Every rendering or video editing software acts like this. So, when you are working on a big project, I suggest you break up the large projects into multiple project files. Thus, you can import them all into a new project while rendering.
8. Update your Graphics Driver
Graphics card manufacturers keep updating their graphics cards to fix bugs and glitches. As an outdated graphics driver can cause a malfunction to Adobe Premiere Pro, you should update your graphics driver if that is available.
Here is the process to update your graphics driver via search and install:
- Go to the browser, type your graphics card model, and hit Enter. When you find the manufacturer’s website, click on that.
- Download the required version manually.
- Double-click on the download file to install the driver by following the on-screen instructions.
Here is the procedure you can follow to update your graphics via Device Manager:
- Press the Windows key and type Device Manager.
- Open Device Manager and go to Display adapters.
- Choose the Graphics card (for example, Intel ® HD Graphics 5500).
- Right-click on it and select Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow the on-screen step-by-step instructions to install the driver.
Once you are done here, restart your PC and see if the solution has stopped the crashing.

9. Check for Overheating
Premiere Pro pushes CPU and GPU harder when you work with heavy files, editing, and rendering. When there are tons of loads on your PC, it might get overheated. If there is no proper cooling system on your PC, or it’s broken, you have a pretty big issue to be concerned about.
Here’s what you can do to overcome overheating:
- Clean the dust from the fans and vents of your computer.
- Use a balanced cooling system on your computer.
Note: Try to use your computer in a cool environment.
10. Scan your Computer for Malware
A malware attack can ruin your PC’s performance and cause a crash on some of your applications. So if you think that your computer is malware-infected, consider a system scan to remove malware.
Here are the steps to scan your computer for malware:
- Press Windows key+I to open Settings.
- Go to Update and Security.
- Select Windows Security from the left panel.
- Click Virus and threat protection.
- Choose Scan Option and check Full Scan.
- Click Scan now. If any malware is found, pick Remove.
- Click Start actions.
Eliminate malware and see if the crashing issue persists.
Premiere Pro crashes mainly due to software bugs. But outdated computer hardware (mostly GPU), outdated OS drivers, and compatibility issues are some other causes that trigger the issue. Also, malware, corrupted media cache, and corrupted system files can create the issue as well.
Likewise, from this article, you can troubleshoot every single one above and solve your crashing problem.

Conclusion
Remember the basic four key elements (Memory, Storage, Graphics, Processor) to make an adjustment between them to work properly on Adobe Premiere Pro.
Besides, when you are working on a project, open the Task Manager to have a look at how much CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network are currently working.
Windows Premiere Pro users face this crash issue now and then for their own mistakes, and I’m not out of them. But I’m trying my best to maintain the balance. I hope it’s time for you too.
This is not for MAC users 🙁
This has been great help for me. I am currently using the latest premiere pro on my HP pavilion i7 core with the intel irisx graphics. When I render projects bigger than a minute, the CPU goes over 90%. Everything froze and stayed. Like that over 8hours (I went to sleep) and woke up, it was still frozen.
I did the first step, and change the thing to software only, it was slow, but it did not freeze! Thank you again. Will keep in mind the other tips too!
We are glad that we could help you 🙂
