Slack Disable Message for When Users Leave or Join a Channel

Written By Steven Arends

The joining and leaving messages feature on Slack is a nice touch that lets everyone on that channel know someone has entered or left the channel. This feature comes in handy because it is designed to make the first move when someone enters the channel.

You don’t need to welcome everyone who joins the channel as an auto-generated text will be displayed.slack-disable-message-for-when-users-leave-or-join-a-channel

However, this feature becomes beyond tolerable as thousands of notifications stack up on your system when you have a large Slack channel.

Luckily, on Slack, you can easily disable these join or leave messages. This article will guide you on how to disable these joining or leaving messages on Slack.

So let’s get started!

How to Leave or Join Slack Silently

You need the desktop app and administrative privilege to turn off these leave or join messages on Slack Channel. These messages won’t bother you that much if you have a small Slack channel. But it becomes irritating when there are millions of members on your channel.

Note: You can only disable these messages on Free, Pro, and Business+ plans. If you have an Enterprise Grid plan, it’s impossible to manage join and leave messages.

Here is how you can disable messages when users join or leave a channel:

  • Open Slack Desktop App.
  • Click on your workspace name in the top left corner.
  • Go to Settings & administration.
  • Select Workspace settings. workspace-name-settings-workspace-settings
  • Scroll down to the Channel Join & Leave Messages section and click on Expand. channel-join-leave-expand
  • Uncheck the box labeled Show a message when people join or leave channels.
  • Click on Save.channel-uncheck-save

How to Set Do Not Disturb Hours on Slack

If you are thinking about not disabling the notification, you can try the Do Not Disturb hours to stay interrupt-free for a couple of hours. Often, admins of big channels need to stay active and monitor who is joining and leaving. But like others, they also need some personal relaxation time.

So as a channel admin or owner, you can use Do Not Disturb hours to avoid the joining and leaving messages on your channel for a certain time.

Here is how you can set Do Not Disturb hours on Slack:

Free, Pro and Business+ Plans

  • Open Slack desktop app.
  • Click on your workspace name in the top left corner.
  • Go to Settings & administration.
  • Select Workspace settings.workspace-name-settings-workspace-settings
  • Navigate to Do Not Disturb and click on Expand. dnd-expand
  • Select the default hours when members will not receive notifications.
  • Click on Save. dnd-save

Enterprise Grid Plan

In case you have an Enterprise Grid Plan, you can set the default Do Not Disturb methods on two different levels. When you have the Organization level, you can add an org policy to create a Do Not Disturb hours for all the workspaces under that org. But the method to enable the DND is same as the Free, Pro, and Business+ Plans for a single workspace.

Org Level

  • Open Slack desktop app.
  • Click on your workspace name in the top left corner.
  • Navigate to Settings & administration from the menu.
  • Click on Organization settings.
  • Select Settings in the left column.
  • Click on Organization Policies.
  • Click on Add Policy next to the Do Not Disturb Mode.
  • Check the box stating Automatically disable notifications from and set the default hours when your channel members will not receive any notification.
  • Click on Save Policy.
  • Select Create Policy to confirm it.
