Minecraft Rails : Complete A-Z Guide
If you are facing troubles in making rails in Minecraft, don’t worry, as I have the easiest solution to your problem.
After playing Minecraft for three hours, I made a beautiful railway using rails and minecarts. You can do it too!
What do the different rails in Minecraft do?
Among the four Minecraft rails, the Powered rail increases or decreases the speed of the minecart. And, activator rails drop off any player or item on top of it. Plain Rails are the most common rails, and Detector rails are most often used in Redstone gadgets.

How many Types of Rails are there in Minecraft?
There are four types of rails you will be using. Different rails perform different functions. You need to use four of these rails to create a complete railway system. Most often, the plain rails are found as loots and can be placed on flat grounds.
Here are the four Basic types of Rail in Minecraft:
1. Plain rail: Plain rails are solid blocks and are the most common rails you'll be using in Minecraft. Well, Plain rails can be placed on flat grounds or on slopes.
2. Powered rail: Powered rail is one of the interesting rails because you need a redstone for placing this rail. Your minecart will move along the rail if a redstone is attached to it. If not then, it will stop your cart within one block's distance. A powered rail stands one block upward to its adjacent rails. You can use this rail for much faster transport.
3. Detector rail: In Minecraft, Detector rails are generally used in redstone gadgets. When you move a minecart over a detector rail, it will activate redstone signals.
4. Activator rail: These rails acts like simple rails when they are not connected to any redstone. Activators are quite useful when they are connected to a redstone.
If a minecart along with a player passes over this rail, it will knock the player off. It would be lit if a minecart filled with TNT is passed over the activator rail.

How to Craft Rails in Survival Mode
Crafting rails is simple in Minecraft. You can make your own rollercoaster ride using rails and minecarts.
So, here the steps to Craft Rails in minecraft Survival Mode:
1. Open the Crafting Menu
The first thing you need to do is open your crafting table so that you have a 3x3 crafting grid.
Once you have a 3x3 crafting grid, you have to add utems to make rails.
2. Add Items to Make Rails
After opening the crafting table with a 3x3 grid, place 6 iron ingots and 1 stick in that crafting grid.
This step is a bit tricky because you have to place the materials in a sequence.
In the first row of the crafting Grid, place 1 iron ingot in the first box and 1 iron ingot in the third box.
Keep in mind that the second box should be left empty.
Place 1 iron ingot in the first box, 1 stick in the second box, and 1 iron ingot in the third box in the second grid.
Finally, in the third row, you should place 1 iron ingot in the first box and 1 iron ingot in the third box like the above step.
You have to keep the second box empty in this case too.
Now that you have followed the steps correctly and filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, 16 rails will appear in the box.
3. Move the Rails to Inventory
This is the final step to do for crafting rails. You need to move the new item to your inventory, once you have crafted rails.
How to Create Intersections Between Rails
Creating intersections can be tricky yet necessary while making complex railways.
You just need one material to create an intersection.
To design a simple T-intersection, you'll need a lever. Place the lever next to the T design at the intersection.
Every time you right-click the lever, the direction of the track will change immediately.
How to Ride a Minecart
Now that you have learnt how to make rails in minecraft, it is time to know how to ride a Minecart in minecraft.
Just place your minecart by Right-clicking a rail with minecart in hand.
You need to keep in mind that: the minecart should be placed on level ground so that you have a chance to climb in.
Just right-click the minecart when you're ready to ride.
If you are facing problems in exiting the Minecart then,
Press spacebar or the corresponding jump key you use to exit the minecart.
How to Make Minecarts Faster
If you'd like to create an automated railway system for mining then, you have to use powered rails.
Keep in mind that, powered rails needs a redstone item to generate as the minecart passes over, like a lever or a redstone torch.
Place a redstone torch beneath the block.
Any types of minecart for climbing a slope requires three powered rails to reach top speed.
Quick TIP: Allocate more RAM to Minecraft for a faster gameplay.
How to use Detector and Activator Rails
Detector rails in minecraft are used for momentarily powering redstone.
Detector rails can be used to open doors, power pistons you create.
On the other hand, an activator rail powered by redstone. As the minecart passes over, items will drop you off.
Activator rails can also ignite a minecart stuffed with TNT.
Types of MineCarts in Minecraft
Here are the 4 types of mine carts in minecraft:
1. Plain Minecart
The best thing about Plain minecarts is that, it can be rode by you, your animals, and enemy mobs.
Well, you can control the minecart easily by using the keys you use to go forward and backward. You can make Minecraft gameplay superfast.
You can go up sloped rails using the plain rails, but the progress will be slow.
Plain rails with player on top will travel at maximum speed for 38 blocks on flat ground whereas an empty plain minecart will only travel eight blocks. Place one powered rail every 38 blocks to maintain top speed.
2. Minecart with chest
You can use this cart by Right-clicking the minecart with a chest loaded up with tools, resources etc. for transportation.
Well, this cart is super useful when you are trying to dig deep in the ground and want to keep your inventory empty.
3. Minecart with hopper
Minecarts with hopper is another cool cart you can use in Minecraft. This kind of carts are quite useful for large mining operations.
The hoppers will pick up any blocks or items lying on the railway track. Keep in mind that, Hoppers can be switched on or off by passing over an activator rail attached with a redstone.
4. Minecart with TNT
Minecarts with TNT attached are basically used for faster mining operations.
The TNT will ignite after the cart passes over an activator rail with a redstone attached. The explosion will take place four seconds later. The faster the cart moves at the time of the explosion, the bigger the explosion.
An exploding minecart with TNT will never destroy any type of rails. Now that you have the basic knowledge about Rails and minecarts, it is time to craft the rail tracks.
Facts about Minecraft Railways
- Minecraft players may only place different rails on a block only. However, floating rails can be found in an abandoned mine shaft.
- In a T-intersection of railway you designed, the middle rail will always connect the South-East coordinate.
- A dropped item on a rail will stop a minecart from moving forward or backward.
- An iron pickaxe can be seen in the curved rail only, so don’t forget to pick it up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: How do you make a lever in Minecraft?
Answer: Place 1 stick and 1 cobblestone in the crafting grid to make a lever.
Question: How do you stop a train in minecraft?
Answer: Remove two blocks from the railway track.
Question: How do you turn a Redstone Torch off in Minecraft?
Answer: Place the torch beneath the block. If the block is destroyed, the torch is destroyed as well.
Minecraft wouldn’t be as fun without mining. But entering and exiting your mine every time can be a pain.
But there’s another way, a better and faster way where you can shout wheeeeee as the cave walls past you. A railway.
